La La La, la chorale française de Melbourne, is a community choir based in Northcote, an inner northern suburb of Melbourne, Australia. Our members come together from all around the city.
We’re an a cappella (unaccompanied) choir and sing a variety of music from the French-speaking world.
The choir comprises about 30 members of all ages (sopranos, altos, tenors and basses). Paola Bastreri-Grey, La La La’s Musical Director, is a qualified and accomplished music educator, clarinettist, singer and conductor.
The choir practices every Wednesday (not during school holidays) at the Northcote Uniting Church, 251 High Street, Northcote, from 7.30 to 9.30 pm.
La La La aims to celebrate the music of the French-speaking world. This includes songs in Corsican and Basque, music written by French composers, and songs from Francophone parts of Africa, Canada and elsewhere.
The group prides itself on its musical excellence, supportive approach, warm and welcoming environment, and sense of fun.
Members share a love of singing, the camaraderie within the choir, the enjoyment of experiencing sublime music in a wide range of genres, and the joy of the French language (even though most members are not fluent French speakers).
La La La was founded in 1998 by Catrine Berlatier, who wanted to share her native French music with the people of her adopted country.
Since that time, La La La has grown from a small ensemble of 10 or so people, to a full-scale choir encompassing up to eight singing parts. The personnel of the choir has changed; we now number about 30 and the age range is late teens to…much older.
La La La is tackling an ever-broadening range of music of increasing complexity and has built up a reputation of excellence under Musical Director Paola Bastreri-Grey who has been with the choir since 2004. We believe we are the only French language community choir in Melbourne.
Our Musical Director
Musical Director of La La La since July 2004, Paola Bastreri-Grey originally trained as a clarinettist, gaining her B.Mus. and Dip.Ed. from the University of Melbourne. Paola has broad musical experience including orchestral and band conducting, chamber music, orchestral performance and instrumental and classroom teaching.
Since taking up singing, Paola has successfully completed a Dip.Mus. at the Melba Conservatorium of Music and gained her A.Mus.A. in singing from the A.M.E.B. In addition to her work with La La La, she continues to teach clarinet, conducting and singing; directs the a cappella vocal group, Colla Voce and sings Principal Mezzo-Soprano in the choir of St John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Toorak.
Combining her interest in languages and music, Paola lectured for four years in Italian Language and Diction to singers at Melbourne University and the Melba Conservatorium. She has run clinics in Foreign Language Vocal Coaching through Melbourne Youth Music and freelances as a language coach.
